Supermarket Flowers – A New Chapter in My Creative Journey 🌸
I’m excited to share an update on my latest series of works, which has been progressing beautifully! It all started with a simple bunch of peach roses from Lidl—yes, a supermarket bouquet that sparked an unexpected creative journey.
Before I picked up my paintbrush, I spent several weeks working in my sketchbook, reading up on the fascinating history and symbolism behind flowers. Did you know the Victorians created an entire "language of flowers," where every bloom carried its own meaning? Even the arrangement of flowers spoke volumes! which is something I wanted to explore further in my art.
For me, the roses were at their most captivating as they began to wilt. There was something profound in their fragility, and I felt i wanted to capture this moment on canvas, allowing their beauty to live on.
As I worked through this project, I also took time to journal about my own experiences with flowers. I’ll always remember the first bouquet I ever received—from my Dad when I was 12, recovering from an appendectomy. I felt so grown-up and cherished, I loved the extra attention I got for being sick!
One of the poems that’s resonated with me throughout this process is Buy the Boy Flowers by @Holly McNish. It’s a beautiful reflection on flowers, masculinity, and the way society associates blooms with women—delicate and pretty, while men often only receive flowers at their funerals.
I’ll continue to ponder on these themes as I develop the series further. I’m also starting to make choices about framing for the smaller pieces, and I promise as a subscriber you’ll be the first to know when they’re available for purchase!
Thank you all so much for your ongoing support and interest—it means the world to me.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new chapter in my work!
With love,
Kitty 🌹
